• Congratulations Shawn!

Grace Yoga (GY): What is your personal reason for starting and continuing your yoga practice?

Shawn Carlington (SC): Honestly, I needed to get in touch with my spiritual self and get in touch with ME. That is also the reason why I continue to do it-it feels really good to me. Not to mention, I need the stretch!

GY: What additional benefits have you gained from your yoga practice that may not be offered in another form of exercise?

SC: I am sleeping so much better! I am calmer and feel a lot more centered than I would with any other form of exercise...maybe besides hiking, but it's still a different experience.

GY: Do you have any helpful tips for fellow students to stay committed?

SC: If you really take the time to acknowledge the way you feel after you do yoga, you'll want to continue. If you realize just how calm and good you feel after, how could you not want to?!

GY: This month, we are focusing on Yoga Sutra 3.3: Samadhi is deep absorption on the object without thought of the Self (who is meditating). Then, the essential nature of the object shines forth. How does this sutra resonate with you and how do you think it has played a role in deepening your meditation practice?

SC: I am still learning a lot about meditation. Meditation can be challenging, but I’ve found that focusing more on my breathe and third eye help me to shut off what’s around me, even if it is just for a short period of time.

GY: Please tell us a little about yourself: career, family, background and anything else interesting you would like us to know.

SC: I am a hairdresser of 27 years...Which is why I need yoga. I also love people and connect with a lot of people (through hairdressing). I am also so excited to continue practicing at Grace Yoga. I have clients who go there so we get to chat about the classes we take. Outside of that, I love spending time in the garden, at the beach, and hiking. I am originally from Detroit and moved here (the Bay Area) for love. Sometimes you have to take a chance in life and I am so happy I did. I also believe that what you put out there, your energy, is what you get back.
